Thrift stores are the hidden treasure holders of the shopping world. Often times they are considered to be less than ideal but once in a thrift store, few ever leave unhappy. Lace curtains for $2, designer clothes for $10, and tons of jewelry and dishes for only $1? Yes please! It does not take much to really hunt down thrift store bargains, but with a few tricks and tips a consumer will most certainly be happy and still have money in their pocket after shopping through a thrift store.
Thrift stores sell second-hand items which is unfortunately sometimes a taboo to other people, but that is simply because others do not understand the goldmine that is waiting for them at a thrift store. And if they do not know or do not care, then it is better for you! First of all, locate thrift stores in the surrounding area that are the easiest to get to and have a good reputation. Drop by and take a look to see what they have- really scour the merchandise. Do they put items on the floor that deserve to be in the trash? Are the prices reasonable given the quality? Expecting gently used quality products within a good price range is exactly what a shopper deserves in a thrift store. The next thing to do is to speak to the manager. Ask when are donations received? Every Friday at noon? Every day after 5? Figure out their donation schedule and then plan accordingly. If the thrift store takes donations daily after 4:00 pm, then perhaps you should plan on dropping in at 8:00 on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday before you go into work.
Also, have a loose plan on what you are interested in. Take a look at where you are living and think "What does the bedroom need to make it better for me? What does the kitchen need to make it more useful and welcoming? What does the entryway need?" This way you have a complete list to transform a house into a home and keeping these items in mind helps to truly make the shopping experience a thrifty one. Also keep in mind certain holiday items- if they are on severe discount then it may be good to buy them to decorate with next year! Bargain shopping is meant to be fun and exciting, so relax and have a great time. Remember though, being thrifty does not mean that an individual needs to buy in excess. Have fun!
